Appraisal Time

At my company, we do all hourly associate appraisals at one time.  That is kind of weird, but I think it is a scheme to keep from paying people as much as they would if they did yearly reviews instead.  Once again, big business thinking more of how to save a penny than how to treat their people better.

That’s sad, because IMHO, the better you treat your people, the better they will work for you.

So I did my first one today.  I honestly thought it would be a good one because it was the highest rated evaluation I completed.  Therefore, it was also the biggest increase.

WRONG!!!

This person honestly thought they would get a MUCH bigger raise.  Not in retail, baby.  5% is a good amount for retail.  The problem is that when you are making around ten bucks an hour that only equates to 50 cents.  $20 a week, $86 a month, $1040 a year.  That is not that noticeable of an amount.  Especially after Uncle Sam dips his greedy hands in your pocket.

Some valid points were made, but nothing could change the amount of her raise.  The raises are set in stone based on your performance.  There are 4 measuring standards: does not meet, meets, exceeds, or consistently exceeds.  Let’s just say that around 90% of the store got meets, 8% got exceeds, 1% got consistently, and 1% got does not meet.

This person was talking about how they make less than other people at her same level… I am sorry about that, but everyone knows life is not always fair.  The right person doesn’t always get the job, or the promotion, and sometimes people who do the same job as you make more than you.

Now I dread having to give out all of those meets, with their whopping 4% raise.

Welcome to the BreakRoom

This is my place to let the world know how much crap (sometimes literally) the people who work retail have to put up with. Come back often and see what's being talked about in the BreakRoom.
